Teacher Interview with Jeanne Carroll

What advice would you give to a first-year teacher?

I would tell a first year teacher a couple of things. One, surround yourself with positive people. You just don’t feel like you really know what you are doing and you have so many challenges. You need to be around positive people who can explain to you that that’s quite normal and get you up when you’re feeling down. I would also want a new teacher to know it takes at least 3-5 years to really hone your skills so that you can then start developing things that are meaningful to you. I think that you have to give yourself that much time.
