Teacher Interview with Jeannette Providence

What is your biggest challenge as an ELA teacher?

Trying to make it relevant. Period. Trying to make it relevant. Yes, they have to learn where the comma goes, but how can you make that process of teaching them where the comma goes relevant? How can you make the readings relevant? I think that is the biggest challenge. We are competing against the students having different interests, different things that are competing for their time, but how do you make what you are teaching 15 and 16 year olds who can’t see the connection, make them see the connection or help them see the connection? I think that’s the biggest challenge. Then, with our classes being so culturally diverse, how can you tap into the various cultures that are in our class, recognizing their contributions and then recognizing their relevance to our society as well? I think relevance is the biggest one.
