Complete a Developing English Language Skills, including Reading course that is research-based and includes the study of phonemic awareness, spelling patterns, early intervention techniques, ongoing diagnostic techniques, and a strong literature, language, and comprehension component.

Pass the Reading Instruction Competence Assessment (RICA).* (Applicants who hold a valid California teaching credential other than internship credentials, internship certificates, and emergency permits are exempt from this requirement.)

|
Pass a course (at least two semester units) on the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution.
**OR**
Pass an examination on the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution at a regionally accredited community college, college, or university.

|
Complete computer education coursework that includes general and specialized skills in the use of computers in education settings.
