College Graduate Changing Careers to Get Single Subject Credential

If you are planning a career as a secondary school teacher and already have a bachelor's degree, you will need to meet the following requirements for a single subject credential.

Unchecked check box Meet the basic skills requirement.
Unchecked check box Complete a Developing English Language Skills, including Reading course that is research-based and includes the study of phonemic awareness, spelling patterns, early intervention techniques, ongoing diagnostic techniques, and a strong literature, language, and comprehension component.
Unchecked check box Pass a course (at least two semester units) on the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution. **OR** Pass an examination on the provisions and principles of the U.S. Constitution at a regionally accredited community college, college, or university.
Unchecked check box Verify subject-matter competence by one of the following methods: Receive a passing score on the appropriate California Subject Examinations for Teachers (CSET) subject-matter examination(s). **OR** Complete a Commission-approved subject-matter program or its equivalent and obtain verification of completion from the authorized person in the education department of a California college or university with an accredited program.
Unchecked check box Complete computer education coursework that includes general and specialized skills in the use of computers in education settings.
Unchecked check box Complete a professional preparation program in secondary education, including successful student teaching, and obtain the formal recommendation for the credential by the California college or university where the program was completed.
