Reciprocity Between States

Do you have teaching credential from a state other than California? You may be able to get your California teaching credential through a reciprocity agreement. This means that you may be able to get credit for your teacher preparation work that you completed in another state.

This agreement is made possible through the National Association of State Directors of Teacher Education Certification (NASDTEC).

What is full reciprocity?

Educators with an out-of-state license may be granted a similar license to teach in California, with an approved application, academic records, and criminal background check.

Does California have full reciprocity with teaching certification / licensure?

Yes.

Does California differentiate between experienced educators and inexperienced educators when granting credentials to out-of-state educators?

Yes. Those who have a minimum amount of experience (2 or more years of teaching) have slightly different requirements to earn a clear credential. The requirements are:

  1. hold a credential from another state
  2. hold a regionally-accredited Bachelor's or higher degree
  3. 2 year of teaching experience
  4. moral fitness
