Distinguished Teacher Alyson Burris

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

As an active participant in the promises and hopes of tomorrow, challenge yourself! Be a positive force, but do not be forceful. Lend students a sympathetic ear, but do not be their friend. Keep their eyes on the prize, but never at the expense of their compassion or integrity. Stay away from the chicken in the cafeteria. (Trust me.)

What's the best thing about teaching?

The reciprocal nature of the profession allows teachers to guide students down the path of success, but it also requires teachers to constantly evolve as professionals and challenge themselves personally.
