California Needs Teachers!
Hi, I'm Tom Torlakson, State Superintendent of Public Instruction. I oversee the education of 6 million Californian students in 10,000 schools.
I was lucky to start my career in public service as a science teacher and track coach. I have experienced first-hand the joys of reaching students, explaining to them valuable concepts and watching them develop their yearning for learning and their ability to think and discover the answers on their own and in teams.
It has always been gratifying to see students overcoming challenges and rewarding to make a difference in a young person’s life. So that’s why I’m here to tell you that there’s never been a better time to become a teacher.
Throughout California there is a real teacher shortage. Demand is high, supply is low. In 2014-15 year, the Commission on Teacher Credentialing issued 15,000 credentials, while the California Department of Education projected the need for California schools to hire 22,000 teachers. We were short 7,000.
Demand for teachers in science and math, special education, bilingual education and career technical education is especially high.
What does this boil down to?
We need you. We need your passion, your creativity, your dedication.
Teaching isn’t just a job. It isn’t just a career. It’s a calling. It’s a commitment to our communities, our students and most of all, a commitment to our future.
