What is the Application Process?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid new browser window icon, or FAFSA, form is commonly used for all types of financial aid programs to determine your level of need. You can obtain the form electronically at www.fafsa.ed.gov new browser window icon or from a college financial aid office, your high school counseling center and many libraries. Those sources will also be able to tell you about application deadlines (typically between January and early March for fall entry).

The FAFSA looks at your income, your parents' income, and family assets. The form also takes into account the age of your parents, their retirement planning needs, and the number of children in the household and in college. Information on the FAFSA form is used to determine your family's financial contribution to your school costs. Your school's financial aid office will use this figure to determine your eligibility for aid.
