It’s very difficult to manage your class a lot of times, especially for first-year teachers. It is a lot of trial and error-of rules that won’t work so well. And it is hard to go back and start over anew because the kids don’t like a lot of change. They want things set a certain way, and they want to keep it that way because they want to work the system. And if you change it, you know, they get upset.
The way I have been doing it lately, managing my class, has been we have a system of rules. And if they break them they get a check, and at the end of the week, they check on Thursday. We only do detention one day a week. Last term it was every day, and it was too much work. So every check is 15 minutes of detention, so that kind of works. Then, after four checks, it’s a referral to the office and a call home, things like that. So it accumulates throughout the week, not just every single day.
