What does it take to be a good Elementary teacher?
To be a good elementary school teacher, I think you need a lot of patience. You need to be organized. Being organized is going to help you have a lot less stress. Instead of scattering around, trying to find something, if you have it, if you’re organized and know exactly where to go to get something that you taught last year, it’s going to be a lot easier than trying to invent a new worksheet. If you can go right to it, that’s going to save you a lot of time also.
You need to have fun with the kids. Just keep it real, be real to these kids. Kids know. They know when you’re trying to put on an act for them or not and they really appreciate your honesty. Be honest with them. Respect them also because that’s the only way they are going to respect you. I think you need to keep it fun and also keep up-to-date on the new things that are going on. Try to see things from their perspective. Especially with all the stuff going on in the world nowadays, growing up as a kid is tough. It’s not like it used to be. So keep up-to-date, try to make it fun for the kids. For a lot of these kids, school might be the most positive thing in their life.
