Teacher Interview with Kadhir Rajagopal

Why did you become a math teacher?

Well I taught History and English in Oakland and then at Grant Special Education. I taught Math in summer school. People told me ‘man you have talent in teaching Math. Imagine if you can, you know, teach a lot of kids during the regular school year’. Math is a trigger of drop-outs. More kids fail Algebra than any other subject. In fact California Drop-Out Research Project says if you don’t pass Algebra by the 9th grade you are 70% likely to drop out of high school. So that was another reason that I left History and I wanted to teach Math cause a lot of kids were falling through the cracks because of Math and I felt I had a talent and I wanted to reach them.
