Distinguished Teacher Lilian Terry

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

It is very important to have a mentor teacher in the same subject matter for guidance and help. Do not be afraid or embarrassed to ask for help or admit that you have made a mistake. Students love to see that their teacher is not perfect and it allows them to be imperfect and learn from their mistakes. Although we receive excellent training in college and the teacher prep programs, there will be situations that you will not be prepared, so ask questions and seek help. Always remember that our students are struggling more than anyone could ever imagine, thus patience is a necessity.

What's the best thing about teaching?

When you work with a student on something that is especially difficult for them and suddenly it clicks. They get it! There's no better feeling as a teacher.
