Distinguished Teacher Kim Adams

What advice would you give to people considering a career in teaching?

If you think of teaching as a job, you will find it far more difficult than you expect. You must absolutely love children. You need to have a calm demeanor and extreme patience. Even the best student will try your patience. There is no down time during the school day. There are many demands placed on you by your district, your principal, parents, and the students. It can be very frustrating, draining even, but absolutely rewarding.

What's the best thing about teaching?

The students! I love watching their social and academic growth during the course of the year. Every day, they do or say something that makes me smile. At the end of every school year, I wish I had a little more time with them before they move on. And, in the fall, I look forward to seeing them and hearing about their summer!
